Internship Opportunities at Mission Control
Unpaid internship positions are available for 9th graders through college age in our national office in Plano, Texas as summer and/or school year assignments. While volunteers are appreciated at any time, MPK Interns must first apply then be selected by our national office (a.k.a., Mission Control) out of numerous applicants. Those chosen become part of an elite corps committed to making a social impact through the work that MISSION POSSIBLE KIDS does to engage others in a life of service.
The benefits to being an MPK Intern are many:
- Provides an innovative way to make a huge social impact in their community and their world.
- Becoming known in the community as a leader and change maker.
- Earn service hours for school, athletics, and club requirements.
- Show consistent and long-term commitment to the same nonprofit, which appeals to colleges in admissions decisions and scholarship organizations in granting scholarships.
- Gain valuable job experience for the future (because of the experience gained earlier/longer and at a more professional level than what most students can show, past MPK interns have won both college and professional internships for companies in the fields of marketing, education, advertising, nonprofit management, publishing, and social services).
- Recommendation letters from the national office for college admissions and job references.
What Does Being an MPK Intern Require?
To be considered for a position as an MPK intern, high school applicants must commit to generally volunteering for MPK 2 hours/week for school year internships (weekdays or weekends that fit your schedule), and 4-9 hours/week for summer internships (weekdays). College internships offered throughout the year require 4-9 hours/week (depending on whether the internship is for one semester or longer). Assuming that an applicant has the traits needed, highest consideration is given to students looking to serve for longer terms. MPK understands that conflicts will occasionally occur with student academics and other commitments, as long as most weeks the student is able to serve, and the intern notifies MPK of scheduling conflicts. If more than one work session per month is missed, the Intern must plan to make up the hours to continue to be in the Intern program, except in extreme circumstances or sessions cancelled by MPK. You must supply your own transportation to our office at 2804 Regal Rd., Plano, TX.
What Do MPK Interns Do?
While we have chapters, or groups, of elementary-aged kids in MISSION POSSIBLE KIDS around the U.S., MPK Interns do not usually work with these kids, but instead do behind-the-scenes work to support our kids in the life-changing work that they do. Interns are matched to primary tasks based on their skills sets and interests, and they must be ready to jump in and help with whatever is needed—everything from computer research and curriculum writing to marketing, general office administrative tasks and supplies preparation/collection drives. All MPK Interns become our ambassadors to friends, schools, churches, businesses and other groups they engage with to promote our efforts for world change.
